Have you ever thought about the things you can add to your home for safety? These things may not always be actually attached to your home but maybe things you add to your home for safety. For example, we live in a two story house. My children, wife, and I sleep upstairs and if there is a fire there is only one door exit out. We purchased ladders for the kids rooms to get out of the house. These ladders fold up and are stored in the closet or under the bed. If there is a fire they hook over the window sill and drop to the ground. They are a little heavy but easy for any adult or bigger kid to use.
More ideas:
- Always have an emergency plan!! Everyone in the house should know where to exit the house and where to meet outside of the house. We also plan for alternate escape routes.
- Make sure there are smoke alarms on every floor and in every bedroom. Always make sure you check the batteries!
- It is good to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. We have only used ours once. Let me tell you it makes a MESS!!! I would NOT recommend using a fire extinguisher on any small fire that you can put out easily in another way. But, by all means, if you are scared in any way and the fire extinguisher is there, USE IT! Messes can be cleaned up but smoke damage is horrible and the cost of fixing your home can be pricey.
- If you are continually flipping a breaker or changing a fuse, call an electrician.
- Always replace wires that are frayed. These damaged wires can start fires!
- Place Carbon Monoxide detectors in two places in your home.
